KEYNOTE:  TRANSFORMING YOUTH SERVICES 

Leslie Burger, ALA President 2006-07 and Director of the Princeton Public Library, will continue her conversation about how libraries can transform their communities with a special emphasis on service to children and teens.  Leslie will share tips on how you can create a transformation agenda for your library’s youth services program, trends and issues affecting the delivery of extraordinary library service to youth, and what she learned during her year as ALA president.

SPECIAL TIMES WITH SPECIAL KIDS! 
 
Don't reinvent the wheel!  The speakers will highlight current, successful programming endeavors and community partnerships that enriched the lives of special needs children, offering program models that can easily be incorporated into your plan of service.

PICTURE THIS – ART EXPLORATION FOR KIDS

Interested in taking your school-age programming in another direction?  Carol Simon Levin will share ideas from a monthly program she created that merges literature, art, and creativity.  She’ll present her program plans for everything from prehistoric cave paintings to Pointillism, Cubism to Chagall, Escher, O’Keefe, Matisse, and many more.  It is a program suitable for both public libraries and school settings.

TWEENS: TWIXT TOTS AND TEENS

Trying to attract more tweens to your library, but you don’t speak their “language” or know what to do with them once you get them there?  This program will offer some fun and easy program ideas for this age group plus “need-to-know” tips to talk the tween language as well as some booklists to keep them coming back for more.

Join us for a panel-talk about the twisted tales of the highs, lows and in-betweens of grant writing and execution. A 15-minute Q&A will follow the discussion.

STORY TIMES FOR KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS (Continuation of SPECIAL TIMES WITH SPECIAL KIDS! Program)

Have you been asked to do a story time for children with special needs?  Are you trying to get such a program started in your library, or expand your current story times to accommodate children with special needs?  Where do you start?  This program offers ideas, including books, songs, and activities that have been used successfully with children with special needs.  You’ll leave with one complete program plan to get you started, and ideas for others. This is a continuation of the session Special Times With Special Kids!

NOT TOO OLD FOR PICTURE BOOKS: ILLUSTRATED BOOKS FOR OLDER CHILDREN

 Looking at wonderful picture books, both fiction and nonfiction, that languish untouched in your collection because they are too old for younger readers?  This program will present subject bibliographies, booktalks, and ideas for getting illustrated books into older children’s hands.

RUNNING A MOCK CALDECOTT, NEWBERY OR PRINTZ AWARD ELECTION

Curious about running a Mock Caldecott, Newbery or Printz Award Election but not sure about how to go about it?  Carol Simon Levin from the Bridgewater Branch of Somerset County Library will share tips and techniques she’s gleaned from running these Mock elections for four years in both school and public libraries.  Carlie Webber, the Young Adult Services Coordinator of BCCLS and Latricia Batchelor Markle from Tenafly Public Library will explain how the reading lists are chosen and narrowed down using ALA’s criteria for choosing these awards and how you can have a successful program of your own with your colleagues that incorporates book discussions and networking. 

CATCH THE READING BUG AND METAMORPHOSIS @ YOUR LIBRARY: SUMMER READING 2008

It’s never too soon to “Catch the Reading Bug” at your library!  Metamorphisize your Summer Reading Program by attending this workshop presented by Summer Reading Committee Co-Chair Allison Santos, Princeton Public Library and other members of the 2008 Summer Reading Committee and get an early peek at 2008’s artwork, discuss and share programming ideas, decorating tips, and talk about what worked well last summer in your library.
 

GENERAL SESSION:  PROMOTING MYSELF AND HOW I CAN HELP YOU!

Sharon Rawlins was hired as the new Youth Services Consultant for the State Library in May of 2007.  She will tell you a little about herself and what goals she hopes to accomplish as the State Library’s Youth Service Consultant.  She would like to share some statewide and national youth services programs that she is involved in and let you know how she can assist the children’s and teen librarians in NJ.
